Jim,
Amen and Amen. I love nymph fishing under a strike indicator.I know this is going to sound weird but whether its plastic worm fishing for largemouth, jig fishing for stripers or nymphing for trout, I just love a good "downtown" strike. In fact, I prefer it to a topwater strike. If you can see the fish strike on top, some of the mystery is lost. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy fishing drys and topwaters but down fishing is definitely my favorite. I'm partial to a small flourescent yellow or orange styrofoam indicator toothpicked to the leader because I can adjust my depth easily and you don't have to add floatant but sometimes I think it may not be as sensitive as a yarn indicator. What do you think and what type of indicator do you use and why? Your observations about trout picking up a nymph and blowing it out before you can set the hook or even know it has taken it are right on. I've seen underwater videos of largemouth picking up plastic baits and blowing them out without the fisherman even knowing he had a bite and in my opinion, trout are the qickest of all the fish I fish for to recognize a phony. Great tip. I would like to read more about your nymphing tactics, particularly about how weight affects your drift, tippet size for various situations, 2 fly rigs etc.
