From fishing with Joe, I know he caught more fish than I, generally, and almost always used an indicator.
There are those of us who enjoy casting, stripping, and fishing by feel. I'll go to an indicator if the fish seem to want dead drift flies. I still, and will always, enjoy setting the hook to the bump in the line. I believe that all that you've written is undoubtedly true, but doesn't address some people's ideas about the aestetics of fly fishing. And it works in zone 2, not just on the pellet heads.
