For a great visual aid, line up some yarn on just the tip section of a two piece rod and let him see you cast it. It will help him understand how the loop needs to look and what effect the timing has on it. It does nothing for feeling the rod load(which I think is the most important of all fly casting) but might help him understand some of the dynamics of fly casting.
