For what it is worth, one of England's most well-known anglers, the late Hugh Falkus, argued for white as being the best color. He notes that it is least visible to fish looking up against an overcast sky (typical in his country). His main argument comes from nature itself. He notes that fish have white underbellies to conceal them from predators swimming below. Also he notes that plunge-diving birds have white bellies to conceal them from the preyfish they descend to attack.
Casting guru and wife of the famous fisherman Lee Wulff, Joan Wulff, notes that white is best in poor visibility (for the angler)conditions. As dawn and dusk are my favorite times to fish (and I'm getting half-blind), white is right.
My floating lines are white or clear. I find that the clear Monic floater (3 wgt) cuts down on lining the fish when I use dries. I have found that line to be somewhat fragile, however, so I treat it with great care (stretch it gently to eliminate coils and avoid stepping on it accidentally).
