I agree with David that Jim's tips are excellent. I would throw out one idea as food for thought. Jim makes it clear that there are different leader and tippet combinations for different flies and stream conditions. Rather than rig and rerig your one rod, I follow the advice of one fly-fishing writer (I forget who it was) and carry two rods. One is rigged for dries (often tiny midges) and the other is rigged for dredging pools with weighted wooly boogers or drifting nymphs. The value of owning two rods will be clear to you when you break the only one you have (it happens!) and there is more opportunity to fish. I am, of course, careful when I "park" the rod I am not using at the moment.
