It is the way the fly is constructed and the leader material. Very recently I purchased a spool of the new frog hair tippet. I really loved the idea of the springing action of the leader material. It worked great when i tied on a nymph and worked the bottom. But when I noticed the fish were hitting on top I switched to a parachute Cahill. Needless to say with in 3 cast I cut that material off and tied on some good old fashion stiff nylon. The frog hair twisted a great deal. It wasn't the fault of the leader material but rather the construction of the fly. The nymph floated through the air very easily while the parachute had a great deal of resistance to the air. This is what caused the leader to twist. The stiff nylon counter acts the twisting motion. The stiff nylon is not good for free floating nymphs. So the moral of the story is to match your leader with the fly in size and stiffness.
