In the absence of Jim's great knowledge, I humbly offer this tidbit.

When casting to get more distance, tighter loops, try to use an even moderate stroke, squeeze your grip at the end of the stroke, and then relax your hand a bit. This really makes a positive stop to the rod. Also try to time your hauls (double haul) toward the end of the stroke instead of throughout the stroke. Concentrate on the speed of the haul. The power comes from the haul and the stop, not the stroke. Too much stroke = tailing loops. Always remember that slack line is the enemy of casting, so point your rod toward the water and get all of the line moving by stripping in line before you begin your cast. Hope it works for you.
