Good tips as always, Jim. Regarding the socks issue, I've done a fair amount of backpacking and mountaineering, and have always found Thorlo socks to be a good bet. They come in a variety of weights. As in the case of other clothing items, it's important that you choose your sock thickness carefully, particularly in cold weather - too snug a fit in the boots can make it pretty tough to keep your feet warm. In really cold weather, some people also like to add a so-called vapor barrier liner sock - you can really sweat in these in all but the coldest conditions, though, and I haven't used them much.
