oj,
The only time I consider using the reel is when I know that I'm connected to a large fish. I would suggest not even trying to put fish on the reel so you won't have to deal with that extra headache. Again, it's not necessary for most fish and that way you can concentrate on what the fish is doing and keeping tension on him all of the time. By just stripping in line from your line finger with your line hand you should be able to strip in about 4 ft. of line with each pull.
From your description, it also sounds like you are keeping all of your slack coiled up in your line hand. ? A good technique and habit/skill to develope, especially when wading in fast water. If this is the case, continue to pull in line and add the coils to your line hand. But, if that ends up being too much, drop the coils to the water from your line hand when you hook a fish to focus on controling the business end of things.
If I read your ? wrong, ask again or maybe someone else can help.
Good luck,
Jim <*;))))))))))><
