A good place to practice playing a fighting fish "on the reel" is a small pond that has lots of 2 to 3 lb bass that are readily easy to hook. Usually a farm pond is small enough that you can let them run without getting into the backing much and there are no snags or debris to get hung up in. I fish almost entirely with fly rod now and have caught up to 4 lb bass on a 3 wt. Much more fun than a 7wt that I used to use!
