I use a nail not exclusively. I have yet to have a failure ( I also bass fish with it) so have experimented only marginally. The drawbacks are that it tends to hang in the eyelets if you pull it through. Also, I use quite a bit of my tapered leader to tie it. The butt end only lasts for two ties before the weight is thrown off. The plusses are it has become easy for me to tie streamside when changing and the transfer is adequate in my opinion.
