Years ago I used a method were I would make a direct connection between mono and line. I would heat up a bobbin needle and insert it into the end of the line. This would create a hole in the center of the fly line. I would then take a section of 20 lb mono ruff it up a little on a rock, file, sand paper, what ever I could find. I would then put crazy glue on it and stick it into the hole I made earlier in the fly line. This would make for a very smooth connection. It was in fact very strong. I did have one separate on me in some very cold water one time. But never have I had one separate while fighting fish. It is great for long leaders. When you real one into net.
