Guided my Father-In-Law, Craig, on his first fly expedition in almost 40 years this weekend. Could not have asked for a much better day. He hooked up 10 minutes into the day, and was working like he had been fishing all week. Best thing I noticed was that the fish just didn't shut down like they usually do when the sun hits the water. Slayed the fish in the first slow run below the Cold Hole... Landing about 5 each in the first 45 minutes or so, missed a few that were on the line too. We would move down a hole and just kept getting fish after fish. I typically work fast to cover as much ground as I can, but today was much different. Every hole we dropped our flies in was loaded with fish, so there was no need to move. Literally took us 7 hours to get from the first hole mentioned above to the bottom of EH (And we didn't touch lost creek). Craig ended the day with somewhere close to 20 in the net, with several LDR's. Losing count is a great thing! Big fish for him was an extremely fat 18" Bow, and one monster Bow that rose up immediately after hook up and shook the fly. I landed over 20, all Bows, with two 20" + beauties that slipped away. Big fish for me was also 18".
All in all, an excellent day, where everywhere below the CH was WIDE open.
Of course, leaving the CH, ran across 2 guys, one with a 30 quart cooler, the other with a 50, barely able to load them into the bed of their trucks. I find it hard to believe that those coolers were loaded with sandwiches and water. Just terrible.
Top flies: Near Deer in the morning, #18 RS2 in Gray and Olive dropped behind various color eggs (95% hooked on the RS2).
Tight lines, and happy fishing!
-Brad

Ok ok I’ll give a report……….I headed up there on Friday the 13th and made it there about noon. Set up camp and headed off to the river. Picked up a few on Friday about 10 or 12, I guess, all with midge patterns, Walt’s Midge pattern to be exact. Look in the fly tying section for the pictures. Cream and Black were the hot tickets on Friday. My two buddies showed up about dark so from then on it was food and drinks. Went to the river about 9:00 or 10:00, you have to love winter fly fishing , you really don’t have to be on the water till things warm up some. Went down to Zone 2 and absolutely nailed them I must have caught about 30 or 35 fish in about 2 hours. All on my KB Soft Hackle with a gold bead head. This time I fished it up stream under an indicator. (Here is a big hint here guys, you don’t always have to fish soft hackle on a down ward swing. They also work bounced along the bottom and anywhere in between.) The key this time was that you had to twitch the fly in order to induce a strike. Normal dead drift just would not work. It took me a while to figure that one out but when I did it was game on.
We went to town to watch the game while listening to many kids screaming at a pizza place in town. So evening fishing was out. Sunday was fishing above Sid’s where the big fish of the day was a 20” rainbow followed up by a couple of 18 and I don’t know how many others but somewhere between 15 and 25 would not be too far off the correct count, all on Walt’s midge in RED. That was the big ticket item that day. By the way it took me about 6 different flies before I figured out that is what they wanted that day.
Monday was back to the same spot where I nailed them with a olive KB soft Hackle. It was cludy but there was very few Blue Wing Olives coming off. There were still a bunch of midges coming off and a few rises here and there but the fish were keying in on emerger patterns. The soft hackle was the key to imitating the emerger. Some where on this board I wrote to someone about how to better fish a soft hackle read it because that is exactly what I did. I will tell you that I did pick up two fish within two feet of where I cast the fly all with slack line. I just keeped my finger on the line and felt the fish hit the fly. Set the hook and there he was.
All in all a good time by all and great time camping. I can’t wait till I do it again next month.

Slim I promise you I will do just that. I will say that the key to LMF isn't just the flies that you use but first you have to find the fish, then you have to key in on the fish that are biting, then what they are biting on. If you fllow these simple rules you will have a sucessful day on the LMF.

Brad - No "Treasure" sightings this weekend, unfortunately. And thanks for the pointers Kit. They will be used this weekend.
HA! I am soon going to have a serious change in my currently wide open schedule. With my 1st child on the way, my wife has graciously granted me full rights to LMF, as often as I please for a while. Then it's sianara fishing for me when the little one comes... I will soon be a distant memory to you fine folks!
I was like you 6 years ago. Now im trying to fool the wife into going to Oklahoma for the hiking, stellar cabins, fires in the fireplace, s'mores, and the " I've gotta teach the boys, 4 and6 how to fly fish". She only bites once or twice a year. If I can brainwash the little ones into little fly fishing drones, my hall passes will expand exponentially. We will see. I have not found waders small enough as of yet, but both have rods.
Have fun this weekend
That's awesome, I'm sure you will be successful in your brainwashing venture.
Hope to see you on the river soon.
