My wife and I will be leaving the first part of next week to spend the summer working at River Bend Resort in South Fork, Colorado.
If any of you make it up that way this summer check in with us and we will try to give you a current fishing report.

River Bend Resort
Dick,
At this point, we will be through either late June or early July. River Bend is on the list to camp at. Not bringing the trailer this time. Just the tent to enjoy some national parks along the way between hotels. Plan to hit a lot of great rivers in CO and WY over the two or three weeks we have. I still owe you and your wife dinner. Maybe there will be something better than whatever is in the Hungry Logger building now when we get there.
Danny, the only chance I have of out fishing Lynn is her taking up knitting. That isn't likely either, but I will keep trying.
Clif, we look forward to seeing you and Jeff this summer.
Scott, hope you have reservations for a tent site at River Bend. The first of July they are pretty full. We look forward to seeing you and your family as well.

Eric, drop by when you come up in July and we will let you know what has been working for us.
Look forward to meeting you.

We finally arrived in Colorado and got a few hours fishing in on the South Fork of the Rio Grande this morning. We caught more than 30 and less than 40 up to 18 inches between the two of us.
Mostly on dry flies, but a few on drops. 90% browns. The river is perfect for fishing right now.
No Danny, Lynn did not out fish me today. Maybe the first time ever though.
Another update on Colorado fishing. My wife Lynn and I spent about four hours on the South Fork of the Rio Grande this morning. The rivers are already way low for this time of year but the insects are active and the fishing is great. We caught a lot today with her doing the most damage. All our fish were caught on dry droppers. EHC, green drakes and Adams. Also saw a few Stone flies hatching.
Dick
Dick,
Wow. Sounds like my kind of fishing. Wish I was up there. 100 degree heat is in our future here. Was worried about the low water conditions since there was such a low snow pack this past winter. Scared to think what the conditions will be in July and August. Hopefully the summer monsoon rains will start soon and help things out. Like Clif mentioned, do you know of any fires in the region? Is that area in a burn ban or can you have campfires? Since more than likely we will be tent camping, we do all of our cooking over the fire. Thanks again for keeping us updated on the fishing and river conditions.
The state of Colorado presently has 8 fires raging out of control. Fortunately none of them are close to us here in South Fork. The entire state is under some form of burn ban with the individual counties adding to that as need be. Due to a low snow cap last winter the South Fork and the Rio Grande are both have very low flows for this time of year. There is still a good hatch going on and the fishing is still good early each day, but by noon the sun has shut things done pretty much. We did get a light rain yesterday which was the first moisture since the last snow.it settled the dust and made us hope for more to come. Those of you planning late July and August trips sure need to watch the river flows. Without rain there wont be much flow.
dick
We have had rain in this area of Colorado the last three days. Yesterday at noon the temperature was 67. I have not made it over to check on the flow of the Rio Grande since the rain started but the South Fork is up a good bit and looking much better. There is more rain in the forecast for the weekend as well as next week. Fishing is still good.

Eric, We are at River bend Resort. R.V. site #32. Cell is 972-351-1106, but it is AT&T, so it seldom works. Look us up Sunday or Monday. We are leaving on a short vacation fishing trip Tuesday. Hard to believe camp host need a vacation fishing trip, but we do. At least that's what my wife keeps telling me.

Dick, I was up there right at a moth ago the week of June 18th. We found out that we were right across the river from River Bend in one of the cabins off Beaver Creek Road. We had a big family trip and me my brother, and dad got up early almost every morning and fished the river there and had a blast. We killed them on an epxoy back green drake nymph all week. The caddis hatches were incredible, but I'm still figuring out my dry fly game so not much success there :( I wish I would have checked the board before I left and maybe we could have fished together some. What a place to spend the summer. Enjoy the rest of it, and I hope you guys get some more rain up there!

Sorry I missed you, Dick. I didn't get your message until too late! I fished the Rio Grande Friday AM, got my butt rained on, but caught fish--all on nymphs. No big hogs though. We fished creeks the rest of the week--Park Creek, Clear Creek, Spring Creek, Beaver Creek (above and below the reservoir), and Poage Lake. Poage Lake was my highlight--I'd never caught a Cutthroat before, and they were blasting dries. Most fun I'd ever had fly fishing a lake. Leaving 50 degrees this AM to drive back to 105 this PM was depressing. Hell, I may just quit work and relocate for the summer.
You guys are killing me! Eric. Glad to see you had a really good trip. Going to have to try that Poage Lake again sometime. Fished it about twenty years ago, but didn't know what I was doing. Still don't, but will have to give it a try anyways. Love those cutties.
Clif..... I know what your luck will be! Just be safe and have a good time. I also read where there are no fire restrictions in the Rio Grande National Forest, so that campfire ought to fill really good. Just bring back some good fishing reports, cool air, and lots of rain!
48 degrees this morning in South Fork. The rivers and streams are all low, but most of them are still fishable. I have seen real nice Brookies taken from Pogue and Hunter Lakes both this summer. It clouds up and rains most afternoons somewhere around us. Even when we don't get rain we at least get cooler temperatures. Clif, we are looking forward to seeing you and Jeff next week.

Got home Saturday night from a fantastic trip to the Rio Grande near South Fork and Creede. I'll keep it short, but wow, we had a blast. Caught lots of nice browns, up to 16" and a zillion brookies and cutts. We had 2 super days on Poage Lake, with cutts up to 2lbs on dries. My friend Jeff and I both took the 2wts for small stream fishing, and also our 7 foot bamboos. I can see no wrinkles on the Anglers Roost bamboo rods. Jeff had a good Friday morning, with 22 fish to my 3! Just not my day, but heck we were at 11,000 ft in God's finest, and didn't really care. They handled the fat cutts and browns with no problem. Just treat a bamboo rod with love and affection and it will repay the kindness. We got to fish with Dick Thursday, and had a blast with him. Caught my best brown from the South Fork. Thank you Dick and Lynn for being so gracious.
No pictures, except in my head!
I forgot to mention this earlier. It was pretty warm the first 2 days in the mtns. Jeff and I both bought a pair of the Chota Hippies. Really a neat deal if you want the support of your own wading boots and the comfort of hip boots. We showed them to Dick, and the next day he was wearing a pair too. He says I cost him too much money !
Clif,
I really enjoyed fishing with you and Jeff. We have been doing real well using small zebra midges the past few days. I caught a real nice 18 inch rainbow today and several smaller browns. A very unusual day in that I caught more fish as well as the largest fish. It was really an off day for my wife, but I will take it and be glad. If anyone else is headed this way this fall contact us and we will try to help you with current information. It has been a good fishing summer on the South Fork of the Rio Grande.

I have to say, the trip to South Fork spoiled me. Some aspects are obvious--scenery, Brookies, Cutthroats, ambient temperature, breathable air, etc. You know what really has caught my attention? How much frickin' litter I pick up on the LMF. I knew it was bad, but now I really know how bad. In 7 days in CO on public water, I picked up: one wax paper cup, 1 beer can (Coors Banquet--it tastes better up there too), 1 Panther Martin wrapper. That's it. On Monday and Tuesday at the LMF I picked up 2 full garbage bags. So many people just have no idea what a treasure this river is--just sickens me.
Eric,
I have noticed the same thing. I seldom see trash on the Rio Grande or the South Fork of the Rio Grande. In contrast, I see a lot on the LMF. I can think of at least two things that contribute to the difference. The concentration of fisherman to miles of river here in Colorado is not near as high as it is on the LMF. Many days up here I don't see another fisherman but that seldom happens on the LMF. I also think the majority of the fisherman fishing these two rivers are a different bread of fisherman than some of what fishes the LMF. They travel further to get here and for the most part are serious, dedicated fisherman. Other than right here in our r.v. park, which is private water on the South Fork, I don't ever see bait fisherman. Much of the Rio Grande is restricted water that requires artificial lures or flies. Yes, I do see more trash on our private section of the South Fork where bait fishing is allowed than I do on the restricted sections of the Rio Grande, but still nothing to compare to the LMF. The bottom line has to do with larger numbers of people. The more you have, the more trash you have. There are not many ten mile stretches or trout water that see as many people as the LMF. Makes me thank the good Lord every day for the opportunity I have to spend my summers in Colorado.
dick
It is sad to see trash on the LMF, or for that matter anywhere. It all comes down to respect. So it not so many words the people that litter on the LMF do not respect the River, others and probably themselves.
It's hard to teach and educate people on the subject of respect.
I will just p/u after myself and others and maybe others will do the same.
Guys I'm just going to put this out there, there seems to me to be a common thread here. That is that Bait fisherman are litter bugs and fly fisherman are not. That isn't really true in my mind. Fly fisheramn leave behind much different trash. We leave behind our indicators; I see them all the time floating down the river. We leave behind the tippet that we cut of.. We leave behind the fly that is stuck in the bottom of the river and whatever amount of tippet material happens to be still attach3ed to it. We leave behind the lead shot that we use for weight. The chemicals in the floatant we use, the chemicals in the glues we use. My point is simple; He who is without sin cast the first stone. It takes all of use to keep the river clean. I take a conscious effort to make sure we are doing our part. It also takes a conscious effort to remind those who are not and help them understand that what they are doing is wrong. That is leaving behind their trash. Sometimes it is a simple trash can that is need and a little sign saying keep your river clean. But then again if they could read they wouldn’t be fishing in the red zone. So do your part to communicate these things to them and if the don’t listen well you know what to do….LOL
Kit,
A couple of weeks ago here on Henry's Fork a small song bird had a dry fly stuck in his bill he had tried to eat. Unfortunately he was about 15' up in the top of a tree, but I got a limb with a branch on it I used to hook the limb the line was stuck in and got him down, but he was too dehydrated and died in my hand.
Slim
Well put, Kit. I wasn't so much out for class warfare as much as exasperation....but I did lose a REALLY nice fish Sunday AM when my top fly got caught in about 80 yds of 14 lb test :-( Yes, it's all about stewardship by everyone. Don't bitch about the McDonalds cup and Powerbait can if you're gonna leave your tippet, leaders and split shot.
