Friday through Sunday AM we are going to go off on our own.. Looking forward to a great time at the river. I went up a few weeks ago and camped just to look around, place is GORGEOUS. Sure wish the landscape around here was like that. Anyway, if there are any more tips or words of advice before we head that way please let me know.. If not, I will give an update of our venture when we return! Thanks again for everyones help the past few weeks.. Got some great information.

I just ordered their #201M Reel for my 3 weight, and am hoping it is as advertised.

For the look and price, I would figure somebody on here either has one, or had one...]]>

The next day we decided to go fish zone 2 in the morning. I have never fished zone 2 so I had no idea what to expect. We hiked down maybe 1/4 mile below the gate. I kept looking for the tree with the red dot people talk about to enter the water but never saw it. Maybe we didn't go far enough. Anyhow, we got down to the water and gave it a go. I fished a green wooley bugger for about an hour and didn't get a single bite. My friend was fishing a smaller streamer, probably 16, and did catch one small panfish but nothing that resembled a trout. We waded up closer to the dam and fished around the rocky area up there. Success! My buddy caught three fish, all rainbows. One of them was good size. I switched over to a nymphing rig again with an egg which trailed a san juan worm. Whammo! I hooked up with the biggest trout I have caught in the LMFR. After a 5 minute fight or so I got him to the net. Really pretty fish. He was just over 20 inches so we decided to keep him and bring him home to smoke. We went back over to the spillway in the afternoon (they generated right after I caught the rainbow so we decided to go elsewhere) and my buddy caught another decent sized rainbow, around 18 inches out of there. We kept that one too.

Overall a great trip, fishing in lost creek and evening hole is pretty slow but they were stocking yesterday so the populations were probably down. Still a fun couple of days of fishing.

A couple pics:

Threw the book at them and did manage to land a fat fat 18" Bow, and two 15" Browns Saturday evening though, which made my weekend.

I hope others had some good hookups too.

Overall it was a good trip. I am still a very new fly fisherman and still make lots of mistakes. Tuesday was a bit disappointing. I used several different flies; wooly buggers, San Juan worms, Elk Hair Caddis, Pheasant tail nymphs, zebra midges, eggs of various colors, Adam's, soft hackles, etc. Nothing really seemed to get consistent attention. I would say the zebra midge probably did the best. I was fishing the upper evening hole, right where lost creek dumps in to past where the faster part of the river is, below the riffles at the top of evening hole. I also fished a couple holes at spillway creek. I probably got about 4-5 fish on the line but lost every one before I got them to the net.

That night I sat in my cheap hotel room (I've had good luck with the Charles Wesley for cheap lodging BTW) and browsed the forum. I have to give a big word of thanks to the guys who posted all the great info on the nymphing thread. I rigged up one of the suggested rigs (white indicator about 4 feet above two #2 split shot, then egg pattern 18 inches below that, then an emerger type wet fly 18 inches below that). Wow, what a difference! I only was able to fish for about 2.5 hours but I landed three and had another 5 or so get off the hook. So, big props to those people and thanks for teaching me!! The more I fish, the more I learn!

All that leads to my question. I think I've got a very bad landing rate. I'm not sure if it is due to poor hook sets or bad technique when playing the fish. I had two large rainbows get off the hook when they jumped and shook the hook out of their mouth.

Any tips for how to play a fish? Specifically when they jump, should you give slack or keep the pressure on?? I'm excited to be getting so many bites on my rig but I'd like to see a few more in the net!!

Thanks in advance and see you on the river.]]>

There is a wealth of information primarily for beginners, but after viewing them I was able to refresh myself on somethings that one takes for granted, for example how to wade safely.

I do not work for Orvis or have any affiliation with them, but they seem to contribute to Fly fishing in many ways.]]>
